1. From a family of doctors to UVA, how did you find the more Eastern style healing that you practice?  And can you describe your practice?

I came to Eastern Medicine through yoga, it was my gateway drug.  I began the practice of Ashtanga yoga in college, and after graduation I packed a bag and traveled to India to study in Mysore for six months.  While there I booked a session with an ayurvedic practitioner.  I needed help because my skin erupted in a terrible break out and I felt awful.  He took one look at me and told me to stop drinking milk.  For years in high school I was plagued by these terrible break outs and my MD father prescribed me antibiotics.  The real issue was that I was allergic to milk and it showed on my face.  It struck me on a deep level.  Eastern medicine looks first toward what can be eliminated from the system in order to experience healing.  This philosophy resonates deeply with me because of its obvious simplicity.  I love the practice of medicine, but not the practice of pushing drugs.  As a child my family was flown to luxurious resorts all over the country on the drug company's dime.  It was fun but felt like bribery, and I feel this is what is fundamentally wrong with western medicine today, it's a multi million dollar racket.  I felt the calling to learn eastern medicine so that I could offer an affordable and effective alternative.

I would describe my practice as a fusion of many modalities.   I combine acupuncture and intuitive healing with therapeutic body work, herbal medicine, and aroma therapy.  Acupuncture relaxes the body/mind and increases the flow of energy in the body. Intuitive healing involves a verbal reading of your energetic field.  This conversation influences the deeper levels of the psyche and addresses belief systems/thought patterns that contribute to disharmony in your mind/body.  Everything else is icing on the cake.  Expect to leave the office feeling like you've shed unneeded layers of yourself!

2. Are there tools/exercises that we can all do on our own to help ourselves energetically on a daily basis?  Get grounded?

Gianna DeFlice

Homework is key when it comes to staying grounded and clear in a bustling city!  We are all energetic beings and we pick up energy from our environments and each other.   Think about your energetic space like a giant lint roller.  If you don't have a way to peel back that outer layer of the lint roller and throw it in the garbage, you'll be walking around with all kinds of fuzzy stuff stuck to you for years. Signs/symptoms that your space is "fuzzy" with other people's energy include: Anxiety, nervousness, tension, confusion, insomnia, mixed emotions, headache, feeling unproductive, and lethargy.  Sound familiar?

Here are some easy ways to clear your energetic space:

1.  Hang out in nature, take your shoes off, and walk barefoot in the sand, grass, etc..

2. Wash your hands after business or personal interactions.  Do this with the intention of "energy breaking"  from that person.  Note:  We especially want to energy break from the people we love most.

3. Put a few drops of your favorite essential oils in a spray bottle and spritz it over the crown of your head as needed.

3. What's the most healing place you've ever been?  Most fun?

Laxman Jhula, India

The most healing places I've ever been include Laxman Jhula, India along the banks of the Ganges River.  Everyone thinks of the Ganges as this polluted, disgusting river, but in Laxman Jhula it emerges from the Himalayan foothills in its most pristine state.  It's ice blue and breathtaking.  The land, colors, smells, and food influenced my spirit deeply and I'll never be the same.

The most fun place I have ever been is, by far, Burningman.  Nothing compares to riding your beach cruiser through massive art installations with 40,000 other like minded people!  If you ever have a chance GO, don't even stop to question the impulse,  you are being called.

4. You are such a stylish healer!  Can you share some of your favorite brands/shops?

Kucoon, Ghostdancer, Jan Hilmer

left to right: Kucoon, Ghostdancer and Hilmer & Sparrow

Rag & Bone is my current favorite brand.  Their hats and jeans are among my favorite articles of clothing. Roseark is my favorite jewelry store. Ssense.com is my favorite online retailer.  I am a sucker for resale clothing-- I love the Wasteland.  I'm a boutique shopper, you'll never find me at the mall.  I shop randomly all over Los Feliz, Silverlake, and Venice.

I have some INCREDIBLE friends who are insanely talented designers, and I love wearing their clothes/jewelry/jackets.  They include Andrea Spratt for Kucoon, Jonny Cota for Skingraft, Rhiannon Griego for Ghost Dancer, Jan Hilmer & Monica Wallway for Hilmer & Sparrow.
