Feeling a little cooped up between renovations on a new house and an impending baby, the hubs and I decided to sneak away for a Saturday night to the Hidden Pond Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine.  It’s a great getaway and I think both couples and families would like it.

Hidden Pond is a complex of a couple dozen cabins nestled in the woods. The cabins are lovely (super comfortable beds! outdoor as well as indoor showers!) and the on-site restaurant Earth is excellent – we sat outside in the garden by the pond, and chefs kept coming by to snip herbs or gather tomatoes for someone’s dinner. There are two small pools on the property – we stuck to the adults-only one, which was divine – good music played at just the right volume and excellent snacks and drinks served during the day. We also checked out the Tree Spa – a cute little space with treatment rooms up wooden planks among the trees.  The massage was not the best I’ve ever had, but it’s a neat experience anyway, and that may have just been the particular therapist. Hidden Pond also keeps bikes around the property so that you can make the scenic 1-mile bike trip over to their sister property on Goose Rocks Beach (though they will also drive you).  A bonfire every night where they give you a basket with s’mores makings  (including old school Hershey bars – the only way s’mores should be made!) and a morning cooler delivered to your cabin with a thermos of coffee, mini quiches, homemade granola, yogurt, and a paper were the kickers for me. The difference between a nice place and a really special one is often in the little details, and Hidden Pond got them right. It was wonderful and relaxing for a night away, and I can imagine it being a great base for a week of Maine activities as well. For those of us who grew up camping on family trips but have come to have more high-end (or just lazy?) taste, it’s the perfect mix.
