Be Ireland: THE MERRION HOTEL in Dublin, Ireland
On my recent Dad/Daughter Bonding Trip to Ireland, we were thrilled to call The Merrion “home” during our three-night stay in Dublin. The hotel is ideally located and friendly-elegant sophistication at its finest. The charm of the hotel is that it is respectfully modest about just how grand it truly is. From the outside, it appears to be just a refined, Georgian-brick townhouse, however, it quickly becomes clear that there is a lot more than meets the eye at this seamlessly run establishment.
The 144 rooms, lovely garden courtyard, spa, pool, beautiful banquet rooms, drawing rooms (where a fire is always lit!), and Cellar Bar and Restaurant are masked by an exterior that leads one to believe they are looking at 4 lovely townhouses. The grandeur behind this façade is highlighted by a formidable art collection. If you don’t have time to visit the National Gallery, the works of many of Ireland’s most celebrated artists tastefully adorns the hotel's walls. The collection includes pieces by Jack B Yeats (the brother of Poet WB Yeats), Louise Brocquy, Martin Mooney, Paul Henry and Edwin Hayes. One unique experience that the Merrion offers is the “Art Tea,” a twist on a phenomenal traditional high tea that incorporates sweet creations inspired by the art on the walls of the hotel. My favorite was "Roses and Temple," a white chocolate and rose water tower inspired by Patrick Hennessy's painting. The Art Tea is a lovely way to spend an afternoon tucked in a plush drawing room, in front of a cozy fire, indulging in a feast of treats and local culture.
Our superior twin room was light, fresh and airy with enough space for two of us to be comfortable. Loved it! Many views from the hotel are of the beautiful government buildings that are across the street. The Merrion's location - steps from St. Stephens Green, Merrion Square, Trinity College, The National Gallery, Lower Baggot street (where you can find several of Dublin’s best pubs), and Grafton Street (Dublin’s shopping street), make seeing the sights and soaking in the city's energy, effortless.
My Dad and I agreed that it is one of the best run hotels we have ever visited. The staff, from the lovely women at the front desk, extradordinarily helpful bellmen, concierge, assistant General Manager, Garrett Power, to the GM himself, were all exceptionally friendly, warm, professional and accessible. Thanks to them for a lovely stay! I can't wait to return.
