Beach Retreat minutes from Charleston, SC- SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC
We love Charleston, South Carolina, where our mother grew up and visited our grandparents there often until their passing several years back. The historic buildings, the waterfront location, the southern hospitality and manners-- we love it all. During the warmer summer months, Sullivan's Island, just a few miles from Charleston over the Cooper River Bridge (made famous in "The Prince of Tides") is one of our favorite places to be. The beach is about the widest, most expansive beach we've ever seen with dunes and sandbars that go on and on...
There are so many gorgeous houses to rent from sprawling new homes with huge porches and pools, to more classic, quaint clapboard beach houses-- we used to rent one that was fantastic and felt like it might fall down, but it just oozed charm. Check out www.vrbo.com to pick out whichever suits your fancy-- we can't help but notice some pretty great deals at the moment, too!
The "town" of Sullivan's is one main drag with a few restaurants and bars. We love the fish tacos and fried soft shell crab sandwich at Poe's Tavern named for Edgar Allen Poe who was stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's from 1827 to 1829. Dunleavy's Pub, located right when you drive onto the island, is a great spot for burgers and beers.
If you feel like more excitement, head into downtown Charleston, which is just 20 minutes away for shopping along King Street where some of our favorite shops are located. Bob Ellis is one of the best shoe stores in the world....
We'd like to dedicate this post to our great Uncle Cadwallader "Quaddy" Jones who lived on Sullivan's Island for decades and loved running, surfing, swimming and riding a tandem bicycle with his wife, great Aunt Lucy. We are thinking of our Charleston relatives and sending our love. xoxo
