GUIDE: History, charming inns and rolling hills in foodie heaven, LITTLE WASHINGTON, VIRGINIA
Last week I was in my hometown of Washington, DC for an awesome reason-- to celebrate the regional and national Youth of the Years for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I have been volunteering weekly at my local Club in Santa Monica and the week in Washington was an incredible testimony to the work the Clubs are doing. The five finalists are kids who all had to overcome hardship and obstacles to become happy and outgoing college freshmen and stars in their community.
Following the festivities, my Dad and I were invited to a dinner out at the magnificent Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Virginia. As it is rumored to be one of the most exquisite restaurants in the country, I leaped at the chance! We took our time driving out there (the drive time is about an hour and a half) on a glorious sunny day stopping for lunch in the old historic town of Warrenton. A picturesque main street has several offerings-- we opted for Iron Bridge Wine Company on the way down and Claire's at the Depot on the way back. They were both delicious with attentive service-- Claire's really stood out as we sat in the charming back dining room enjoying a local chardonnay (who knew? Virginia wine!) and the best chicken salad sandwich I've maybe ever had. The Red Truck coffee shop offers an after lunch pick me up.
We continued onto Washington which is so tiny that the Inn mostly is the town. And it is picture perfect. With the most outstanding service. Our dinner was beyond description and the setting is dramatic, romantic, inspired and flat out lovely. I hope to one day get to stay the night!
We did stay the night in town at the Middleton Inn which is a historic brick property perched on a hill staring straight at the Blue Ridge Mountains. I am overusing the word picturesque but, I mean! Mary Ann is the refined and friendly owner who makes sure you have everything you need. I requested bikes to ride around the majestic country hills and she set us up with complimentary bikes from the Inn at Little Washington as one of hers had a flat tire. The rooms in the main house have soaring ceilings, fireplaces and the two we were in had stunning views of the mountains. They are well appointed and you get the feeling you're staying in the guest room at a friend's country estate. The Cottage is absolutely adorable and I would choose it for a romantic getaway and the Cabin is perfect for families or two couples traveling together. The included breakfast the next morning was in a word, decadent! Fresh baked cherry and ginger scones, followed by yogurt, fruit and granola parfaits, followed by mushroom, spinach and gruyere omelettes with crispy bacon... Am quite sure I gained a few pounds on my short visit to Washington!!
The whole adventure was truly sublime and restorative. I can't wait to go back!
