Designer HEIDI MERRICK shares her favorite beach getaway... and what to wear! by Mary
Heidi Merrick is cool. She is one of those California girls who is refreshing, knows what she wants and how to go about getting it-- for her first collection she personally made each pattern and sewed each sample. Her clothes and her gorgeous pillows reflect her California lifestyle and we love her take, "It's much easier to be kind when you feel beautiful." True!!
Yesterday, I visited Heidi at her gorgeous studio in downtown LA where all of her wares are produced within walking distance. Having discovered Heidi in Calypso Home, I was thrilled to find her line of vibrant, vegetable dyed pillows at reasonable price points.
Maeve, a mutual friend clued me into her fabulous clothing line! Uh oh! Heidi's collections are a mix of flowy, elegant bohemian clothes to wear for a day at the beach that segues into cocktails, as well as more tailored blazers and trousers she and I both deem perfect for bombing around the city. Trying on almost the entire studio, I reigned myself in and walked away with of all things, a suit!! But what a sexy suit. Skin tight yet sophisticated army green cigarette pants with zippers, and a matching blazer with black leather peeking out from under the collar and as elbow patches. Delightful! Ready to rock the world in my new suit.
I asked Heidi where she goes to get away from it all, recharge and get inspired. She is a woman passionate about surf. Which makes sense as it's in her genes- her Dad is famed surfboard shaper Al Merrick. Her response...
Sayulita, Mexico
Sayulita is a charming small beach town on the Pacific coast of Mexico with a fabulous surf break, of course!
STAY
Heidi's pick is this luxury hotel perched above the beach with stunning views. A collection of villas-- no two are alike but they all have balconies or terraces from which to soak up the seascape... They also offer free use of their surfboards and kayaks as well as beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach!
WEAR
Heidi's suitcase is packed with bathing suits and her painting tunics....
I for one am packing my bags....
