Mobile Food Trucks by Alix, our fabulous freelance writer/intern

Whether we like to admit it or not, technology and convenience run every aspect of our lives. So, it makes perfect sense that the Mobile Food Truck concept has come to fruition with in the past few years (2008 to be exact) and has literally taken over in major cities like LA and New York.

While living in New York, I wasn’t one to hop on the band-wagon of this trend. But now residing in LA, I find it hard to ignore the extensive variety of Mobile Food Trucks that populate certain locations and neighborhoods. It is especially hard to avoid the five or six trucks that are parked every day just a few blocks from where I live on Sunset and Cole. Let’s face it, we have come to value our time much more and gotten into a habit of becoming indolent when it comes to going out and purchasing certain amenities or even sitting down to eat now. We long for fast, convenient food and with the Internet and Facebook and Twitter perpetuating convenience trend, its hard not to give in.

SPE (South Philly Experience), Boba Truck, Shrimp Pimp, Streets of Thailand, Patty Wagon Burgers, Ahn Joo (Korean Snack Bar),  and Delicious Meat are just a few amongst the Hollywood crowd of mobile trucks on Sunset and Cole.

One truck about to surface on the mobile scene that piqued my interest is meltDOWN,  specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches. Who doesn't love a grilled cheese?!? Ryan Afromsky, the founder of the project, came up with the grilled cheese concept in college after many years of working in restaurants. He opened a restaurant in Culver City, CA, also called meltDOWN in 2007 that left it's cult followers bereft when it closed two years later. Now you cheese lovers can get your hands on the ultimate comfort food on the road with meltDOWN on wheels. Featured on the menu will be the Classic Three Cheese, as well as Ryan’s favorite, the Cheddar, Ham & Apple, which has Smoked Ham, Sharp Cheddar and Apple Butter on Sourdough Bread. meltDOWN has prided itself on homemade recipes and fresh ingredients, so don’t expect anything less on the truck.  There might be fewer offerings, but there will be more places served and extended hours, which should make those of you who can’t make it during your lunch hour happy.

Now here's the catch!  The truck can only launch if Ryan raises $25,000.  They've raised over $3500 and still have a ways to go, so if you love your grilled cheese, consider "investing!"
