More from Mallorca....
On our first real day we felt like being active and getting our bearings. Our new best friend Bridget at the front desk suggested a hike right from our hotel to the neighboring mountain-top town Galilea since we didn't have a rental car. After about an hour and half of winding mountain/country roads bordered by olive trees, goat pens and traditional stone houses and trails through the woods, we wound up in the town of Galilea overlooking the sea and valleys. You'd probably miss this town if you didn't know it was there and explore the area around the church -- a good rule of thumb in most European rural small towns. We were starving after our hike and found an authentic Bar/Restaurant off the church square -- Cafe Sa Placa del Galilea-- with a terrace clinging to the hillside and views to the mountains and sea. Lunch here was a real discovery-- off the beaten path and we never would have found it had we had a car as there are more"spectacular" hikes to be done on the island and more noteworthy towns to visit. We like this slice of rural country life....
The other highlight of our day was Cava at our hotel, Gran Hotel Son Net, and dinner at their exquisite restaurant, Oleum. In a grand room with stone walls, rough exposed wood beams and red and black velvet covered banquettes, the setting is quite dramatic-- a worthy backdrop to the food and wine. We continue to love every local wine we try -- white and red, all from Mallorca and all inexpensive. Macia Batle and Son Puig wines have been some of our favorites.
Cheers for now!! Checking out the famous town of Deia where Michael Douglas and Andrew Lloyd Weber have houses and the much esteemed La Residencia hotel tomorrow.... xox
