The Perfect Workout: Taryn Toomey's the class
Taryn Toomey's the class is the new exercise sensation sweeping New York, and I am in the swell after sampling only one class. Taryn has designed the perfect combination of fun, intensity, and thoughtfulness into a 75 minute exercise class that you (and several sleek celebs like Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Watts) emerge from feeling mindfully centered in your own energized endorphin high.
She kicked it off and got heart rates pumping with jumping jacks to a remix of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know If He Really Loves Me." Joyful jumping is truly my favorite way to dance. The cardio bursts are interspersed with strength training and toning exercises, before slowing it down with stretching to The Smiths "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want." The excellent playlist helped distract me from my burning muscles along with Taryn's messages about embracing the voice in your head when things get hard and changing it. Taryn herself is effortlessly chic, energetic, athletic, with the right amount of cool accessibility and she manages pulls off inspiration without being preachy. Class ends with a seated mediation to seal in the accomplishment of sweating it out physically and mentally.
I left feeling amazingly clear and energized, wishing I could come to the class a couple times a week. The only bummer is that currently it is only offered in NYC with limited times. Sign up in advance as the class fills up fast.
And Angelenos, don't despair, we are chatting with Taryn about collaborating on an event in LA sometime soon! Can't wait for Taryn and the class to come West...
