Three of our Favorite Hikes....

While the lingering marine layer doesn't make for perfect beach weather, it is actually perfect hiking weather. In some cases you can even hike above the marine layer and steal a couple moments in the sun.

Paseo Miramar: This hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours if you go the whole 5.5 miles to the Parker Overlook. Since this trail is not a loop and is an out and back, you do have the option of just going for as long as you like, although the overlook is a nice reward with views from Downtown to Catalina. The first 20 minutes of the hike is an intense uphill climb, but then it evens out. No Dogs allowed on this hike.To get there: Located two blocks east of the PCH off Sunset. Take the PCH to Sunset and turn left on Paseo Miramar (the turn is right after Los Liones Drive). Wind up Paseo Miramar until it dead ends at the trailhead. Park on the street.

Temescal Canyon Loop: This trail is narrower and weaves through some dense tree cover, so if the sun happens to be beating down it's a nice choice. The four mile loop takes about an hour and 15 minutes, and you have the option of adding an extra mile with the skull rock detour. It's a moderate hike, with some spectacular views from the ridge crest, a waterfall, and the feeling that you are far away in the forest with the sycamore and oak trees. It does get pretty popular on the weekends so time your moment - early morning or closer to Sunset. To get there: Located in Temescal Gateway Park. From Santa Monica, drive north on the PCH, turn right at Temescal Canyon Road, cross Sunset into Temescal Gateway Park. The trailhead is at the end of the parking lot. If you don't want to pay the park fee for parking, park along Sunset and walk in.

Eagle Rock: Our favorite time to do this hike is in the late afternoon and then follow it up with amazing Margaritas and dinner at Froggy's. There are several places to start this hike and several loops, diversions that can be added depending on your timing. The easiest place to start is from the Trippet Ranch parking lot. It's two miles to Eagle Rock (four miles there and back). You begin on the old fire road, wander through beautiful fields, and then ascend to actual Eagle Rock. The 'Rock' is a stunning place to take a quiet moment for yourself and appreciate the amazing views. There is something special and restorative about sitting on this boulder. We highly recommend it and rewarding yourself with a sunset trip to Froggy's when you finish. To get there: From Santa Monica take the PCH north, turn right at Topanga Canyon Blvd (Highway 27), turn right on Entrada Drive and carefully follow the winding road for about a mile until you see the Trippet Ranch entrance.
