Tucked away in the heart of Santa Ynez's flourishing wine region, the Alisal Ranch has been an ideal getaway spot (only 2 hours from Los Angeles) for decades.  We discovered our inner cowgirls while there last week on the morning horseback ride to breakfast at the Old Adobe, a beautifully restored homestead in the middle of the property.  After an hour ride through abundant nature- we saw a bald eagle having his breakfast-- an unfortunate duck, a buck resting in the grasses, blue jays, and tarantulas, all before 11am- we feasted on the Ranch's homemade scones, cinnamon buns, pancakes and cheesy eggs.

We were in the good hands of Haddie, one of the seven wranglerettes at the Ranch, many who grew up in non-riding families but followed their passion for horses and were led to Alisal.  We were so inspired by our morning ride that we signed up for a private lesson/ride the next day where we were able to lope (canter in Western speak) through the hills.  Loping is one of the most thrilling and surrendering activities -- the speed is exciting and the fact that you are in sync with this enormously powerful animal (or else you're holding yourself rigid and jamming up your spine!) is the ultimate surrender.

We had so much fun don't be surprised if you see us in new chaps and boots hanging around the stables...

Later this week we'll regale you with other highlights form our time up at Alisal!  Stay tuned!
