Hyde Mammoth

Mammoth Mountain is the only revered ski mountain within driving distance (5-6 hours) of LA.  It wasn't until we discovered Tamarack Lodge, a collection of charming and authentic cabins set on the banks of the Twin Lakes, five minutes from the very new and generic "Village of Mammoth," that we really loved going.  Tamarack oozes charm, quiet and offers staggering views of the lakes and mountains that are uncelebrated in the newer developments in town.

The Lakefront Restaurant is by far the best restaurant in Mammoth.  French Chef Frederic Pierrel turns out a to die for French Onion Soup, scallops, pork chops, fish and the best blueberry tart all in the cozy and intimate dining room that only has about ten tables.  After dinner, retire fireside (the giant stone fireplace dates from 1924 which is ancient in California) for a nightcap.

The cabins are well appointed with fireplaces and kitchens -- we opted for a deluxe and were delighted.  The more modest yet fairly priced rooms in the main lodge are pretty basic but charming and the beds and bedding are all new and the baths have all just been retiled...  If you're on a budget, for $99 (shared bath) or $159 (private bath), the price is right!

We love this oasis in the mountains.  Skiing all day, having an apres ski in the Village -- the cocktails at Hyde are too good, and then staying on property at Tamarack the rest of the time.  Walking on the frozen lake was surreal (until Napper's foot went through the ice!) and we just might come back up during the summer to experience the Lodge and lakes in another state of glory.
