Embrace the History and Southern Hospitality of Charleston, South Carolina at 21 EAST BATTERY BED & BREAKFAST
The best part about discovering and staying at the charming 21 East Battery B & B was meeting the owner, Charles Duell, an affable historian who has taken extreme care in preserving his family homesteads which embody Southern hospitality and history. As our mother is a native Charlestonian, we spent many a school holiday staying with our late grandparents in their beautiful old homes a stones throw from 21 East Battery. Yet, while we've been to Charleston as many times as we are old, this visit was the richest in terms of history thanks to meeting Mr. Duell. His 21 East Battery Bed & Breakfast is located in the carriage house and former servant quarters on the compound of one of the most historically significant houses of Charleston, the Edmonston-Alston House, now a museum. He encouraged us to take a tour of the Edmonston Alston House, and also to make an afternoon and evening of exploring Middleton Place, which boasts the oldest gardens in America (more on that later this week). Middleton Place was the country home/plantation for Mr. Duell's ancestors while the Edmonston Alston House was their headquarters for doing business and entertaining in town-- town and country at their finest!
What we most loved about staying at 21 East Battery was that we felt like we were staying at one of our grandparents beautiful homes as we used to when visiting Charleston. We adored the spacious and tastefully remodeled carriage house and appreciated Southern hospitality at its finest with Julie the innkeeper's quiches, banana bread, and fresh baked cookies delivered to the carriage house kitchen/dining room before our arrival and throughout our stay. We also loved sitting on the porch sipping a chilly Chardonnay at the end of the day before a lovely stroll to nearby restaurants. 21 East Battery is in a perfect location for exploring Charleston as it is steps from Rainbow Row and the Battery which borders Charleston Harbor. The prices are also hospitable.
We are so happy to have found our own little spot that feels like home in the loveliest and most historic part of Charleston.
