Beauty obsession: By Terry! by Perrine Meistrell
Whether I am in a celebratory mood, or having a case of the “mean reds,” the beauty floor at Barneys is my “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” I could go on about all the fabulous beauty lines Barneys curates, but one particular brand stands out to me, and inspired this review. About a year ago Bobby Wells, my friend and make-up artist extraordinaire, introduced me to “By Terry” while we were at Barneys.
He applied a bit of the Crayon Blackstar eyeliner (think femme fatale a la Brigitte Bardot in St Tropez, or Liz Taylor in Cleopatra) and a dash of the Or De Rose -an incredibly hydrating, redefining lip balm with a sheer pink color, and flecks of 24 carat gold that give your lips a beautiful radiance. The black liner brought out the blue in my eyes dramatically and actually stayed put, as opposed to most liners, which tend to smudge and disappear on me. I was also enchanted by the color, shine, and nourishing feel, of the lip balm. Since then I have continued to invest in the Or de Rose lip pot and also to indulge in the occasional By Terry eyeliner or eye shadow, which are always phenomenal as well.
Excited to try more, I recently returned to Barneys for an appointment with a By Terry rep, the talented and sweet make up artist /actress Gina Maria Trello. I requested “golden, glowy” make up, my preferred look, and perfect for the summer event I was attending that evening. Gina immediately knew what I had in mind and the right hues to achieve the best aesthetic for me- golden tawny browns on my eyes, coral on my cheeks, and peachy rose on my lips. Gina started by prepping my skin with the Source de Rose lotion toner followed by the Seve de Rose serum for face and eyes. Next she applied the sheer expert foundation and touch expert concealer (both provide ideal coverage for summer months as they are light liquids), followed by a rich cream blush in peach nude to which she added a layer of the coral rose liquid blush (a true stand out.) For my eyes she combined the Ligne Blackstar liquid liner with the Brown Stellar Kohl Terrybly, along with the Ombre Blackstar eyeshadow, and Growth Booster mascara. Finally for my lips we used the Crayon Oncteux for lips in Pulpe Rose and the Terrybly Lip Gloss in Honeymoon Kiss (another pinky shade I adore!) Every product Gina used was fantastic.
Gina was also kind to share with me a few of her personal favorites and the summer must haves at By Terry. Among her top picks: the Liquid Blush, the Baume de Rose and Lipstick (as it is never drying and stays on forever), the cream cleanser (leaves skin supple), Teint de Rose (an embellishing cream that makes even sallow skin lovely) and Huile De Rose (dry rose oil.) Summer hot sellers include the Aqua Lip Jelly Tint (which Bobby had also advised me was completely unique in its lasting color; it slides on sheer and transforms into a popping pink color of near tattoo level strength) and the Serum Terrybly Sunbooster (a triple threat that hydrates, gradually builds the perfect bronze, and protects skin from UV rays.)
Terry de Gunzberg comes from a family of artists and scientists, and this blend influenced her passion for both the alchemy and creativity of make up. The former director of make up design at YSL, Terry founded her own brand with the goal of creating make up that met the same standards of expertise and excellence as “haute couture” fashion: rare, creative, innovative. She is similarly inspired by modern art and sees parallels between its codes and the composition of her own creations. Everything from the active ingredients to the packaging is planned to meet her exacting standards of luxury, and she uses the most precious pigments to create high performance formulas in a range of colors. The motto of By Terry is “radiance,” as she seeks to illuminate and enhance skin, uncovering on each woman the “quintessence of perfect light.” Her line looks luminescent on, but never overdone.
The products also smell, taste and feel lovely- a reflection of Terry’s interest in the sensory dimension of make up and its intersection with a woman’s emotional experience. Terry’s ultimate beauty tip? “Pink is the color of healthy skin,” giving balance to skin, and a rosy glow to cheeks, such as one would get after a walk in the countryside. So, while we all enjoy these fleeting summer months, indulge in a little rosy treat from By Terry to maintain your glow after the sun sets…
xx,
Perrine
