GLADSTONE'S in the Pacific Palisades, CA gets a delightful overhaul by the swank SBE group by Mary

Following the sunset hikes my friend Sara and I take time to time, we like to reward ourselves with a glass of wine and an appetizer -- we like to think of it as a well rounded, balanced, if you will, fitness regimen.  Yesterday, we were lamenting our limited options of restaurants/bars to choose from in the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica area, but kept returning to Gladstone's, as it was such a beautiful, sunny day.  On past visits we had always been so grossed out by the place (seagulls and pigeons everywhere, peanut shells all over the place, remnants of previous diners' meals and condiments stuck in those disgusting concrete tables and benches, and sub par food), but we determined we would just hang outside and make the most of it.

What a delightful surprise when we walked in and were met with managers and hosts clad in crisp linen suits instead of the usual cheesy fluorescent t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up and headset on top!  And the facelift that has occurred on the actual property is amazing-- the blacktop floors have been replaced with dark wood plank floors, the disgusting aforementioned concrete slab tables and benches have been ripped out and replaced by wood freestanding tables and cafe chairs, the pigeon and seagull problem is solved by gigantic, attractive white umbrellas that are outfitted with heatlamps and speakers and the menu has been revamped.  The interior of the restaurant is equally transformed and remains beachy, but more upscale with dark woods and bright whites.  To what do we owe this transformation?  The SBE group -- of Bazaar at the SLS and Katsuya, amongst other LA hot spots, has taken over (thank God!).  They have brought in SBE chef Daniel Elmaleh to refine the menu.  We loved our seared tuna salads!

We are so happy that we can actually go to Gladstone's and enjoy it now!! And maybe check out one of the beach parties they are planning for this summer...
