Lindsay Ronald of Wine Spectator Gives Us 5 Wines for Summer all under $20!
Lindsey Ronald has been with Wine Spectator for 15 years and has a few recommendations for traveling the world wine glass in hand without a passport…
Having spent my entire 20s and 30s working for Wine Spectator, I’ve heard every wine myth, namely, “Chardonnay is too oaky”, “Pink wine is sweet wine,” and as quoted from the movie Sideways, “Merlot sucks.”
I’m here to say, don’t listen to anyone. This summer, create your own wine excursion! Summer is the perfect time to experience new white wines because the foods are generally light and the price is right. If you like crisp, white wines forgo the typical California Sauvignon Blanc in favor of other white values like Vouvray, the Chenin Blanc grape from France’s Loire Valley. If you want to be ahead of the curve, try a crisp Falanghina from Italy’s Campania region. Warning: Before showing off your new knowledge, make sure you pronounce it correctly (FA-lan-GHEE-nah.) If you can’t say adios to Sauvignon Blanc, try one from New Zealand or Chile. Due in large part to their distinctive terroirs, they differ dramatically.
My summer faves are all under $20 and can be found in local wine stores. If you can’t find the exact producer, ask for an alternative. Retailers love to help, but I recommend using words like “good value” and “regional values” to stay within your budget. The goal this summer is to broaden your palette, not break the bank!
