Lucy takes on Kiteboarding in Tulum
I had been curious about trying kitesurfing/boarding for awhile after seeing all the kitesurfers flying along the coast of Malibu looking badass and having the time of their lives. My brother-in-law, Napper, was dying to try it, so I bit the bullet and agreed to sign up for lessons with him at Extreme Control when we were in Tulum. It is definitely a bit of a time and financial commitment, as you need to complete six hours of lessons on land before you are turned loose in the water (and even then you might not see the board for a bit). Our first three-hour lesson was somewhat frustrating because the wind was uncooperative and our instructor was a bit of a burnout whose limited instruction was further interrupted by his girlfriend leaping on him every few minutes. However, the whole experience turned around the next day when I was paired with dream instructor, Heather Froeming. She is patient and cool and everything started to make sense - I learned how to properly control the kite and finally got a taste of the water! I see why people are hooked on the sport can’t wait for another trip to a windy beach or for warmer weather in Malibu. If you are short on time, I definitely recommend taking private lessons with an instructor who you feel comfortable with, as there is a lot to learn before being unleashed upon the water.
