Sophisticated yet unpretentious Malibu restaurant
Napper, my husband, and I just discovered a new spot in Malibu which is only a twenty minute drive from "town" and instantly makes us feel like we're on vacation while we're up there. On one of our excursions up the coast, we noticed Charlie's on the Carbon Beach stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway and it looked cute so we decided to give it a try for dinner. We were not disappointed. Charlie, the owner, and Wally, the manager, couldn't be friendlier- in a way that is festive and welcoming and not overbearing. The food is delicious- the old chef was 100% Italian from Sardinia and left the restaurant his authentic recipes and style which are executed perfectly especially with the white truffle oil infused pizza. The salmon was fresh and a good balance with the homemade cookies served with warm milk spiked with vanilla for dunking. Charlie's also has an impressive wine list and an exclusive supply of a local wine as well as a watermelon martini made from ripe watermelons plucked from a nearby patch. The setting at Charlie's is also a welcome departure from the kitschy fisherman's shack decor that many Malibu restaurants push to the limit. Charlie's style is contemporary, but still warm,
a sophisticated spot. We are thrilled to have a new dinner spot in Malibu and will certainly be regulars!
