The Basalt, CO Roundup...by Lucy

As I mentioned yesterday, Basalt is the perfectly quaint town 20 minutes down valley from Aspen. The Fryingpan River runs through the heart of town. I know there are a lot gems, but here are my favorite discoveries in Basalt:

The Riverside Cafe is located, as the name suggests, right on the river.  This is the perfect place for happy hour or casual dining.  I used to love coming here in the summer when I lived in Aspen years ago as being an East coast girl, I'd miss the water and the river gave me a little dose. Tempranillo is the fanciest option in the town.  Tastefully set in a beautiful yellow house, internationally acclaimed chef Javier Gonzalez-Bringas, a Madrid native, "combines an old-world style with a new-world flair in his signature cuisine." Everyone I polled said this was their favorite spot for dinner out in Basalt.  They are particularly known for their paella and sangria.

If you're craving your summer seafood fix in the heart of the mountains you're in luck and can still get a lobster roll, steamers or whatever else you're in the mood for at Butch's Seafood Shack.  It is only open on the weekends though, so time your trip wisely.

For coffee and a pastry after a morning walk on the river, Midland Bakery & Cafe is the spot. They make their own donuts and strawberry jam and the breakfast burrito looked delicious.  Next time I want to have real breakfast here too.
