A Little Bit of Mary's New York, New York

I just got back from an action packed three days in New York City.  There to celebrate the wedding of one of my best childhood friends, Teddy Sullivan, I stayed up way too late, drank way too much and had a fabulous time.  Here are some of the highlights and some of my favorite places in the city.

EAT

Tipsy Parson

Had dinner here with the ladies on Friday before the big cocktail celebration for the wedding.  Tipsy is a new spot with a little bit of a cozy British feel-- the dim lighting, "faux bookshelves crammed with books" wallpaper, mahogany bar and then a candlelit, brighter back dining room with splashes of red, were all very inviting on a cold night in New York.  The food -- upscale comfort food, was quite delicious, especially the mac and cheese, scallops and kale salad.

The Cupping Room

I have been coming to the Cupping Room literally for decades as it is right across the street from my Mom's apartment and one of the only good breakfast spots downtown.  It is bright and comfortable and the sour cream muffin with a strawberry on top is delicious, as is the broccoli and brie omelet.  They also have a sinful white hot chocolate which is a treat on a cold afternoon.

Lucky Strike

After a weekend of late nights and too many cocktails, salad with goat cheese and cheeseburgers at Lucky Stike was in order on Sunday night.  Tucked into a wood paneled bistro setting in Soho, my favorite seat is one of the tiny tables in the front windows.

DRINK

The Gansevoort

Images-5

This modern bar with soaring views of the city sits atop the Gansevoort Hotel in the Meatpacking District.  We had too much the at the night before the wedding party dancing to Britney, The Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga with a good looking crowd.

Los Feliz

Be forewarned that the Lower East Side is not what it was a few years ago-- a part of town that one felt that they were discovering.  It has been Discovered.  The throngs of people lining up to go into bar after bar was a little disconcerting and made it feel a little like Times Square.  We found Los Feliz which is deceptively huge but well decorated in an inviting minimalist southwest, adobe style serving an attractive more refined clientele than the hoards of B&T and college kids swarming the streets.

SHOP

Foley and Corinna

This is the original outpost of Foley & Corinna and although it has been redesigned to be rather fabulous and has been discovered -- it is carried in stores across the country, I am still partial to Foley's flattering and feminine meets edgy style.

Wink

This tiny shop in Soho is packed with the best edited trends of the season.  I recently bought a pair of J Brand skinny jeans and Hunter wellies here.  For the record, all five ladies I was shopping with bought a pair of the J Brand jeans-- they are a revelation!

Comptoir des Cotonniers

Lucy and I first discovered this French chain in Paris and were delighted to find an outpost a few blocks from our Mom's apartment in Soho.  The chic, minimalist designs are tailored, refined and well made.  At affordable price points, this is one of our new favorite stores.
