Being Active in Washington, DC!
DC is vibrant these days! I'm pleasantly surprised with new discoveries each time I return home. On this two night layover I managed to squeeze in an hour-long yoga class at Tranquil Space, on 17th & R, AND reunite with my fellow Kilimanjaro climbers and explore a new trail not too far out of DC.
We had ambitious plans to do a five-hour hike in the Shenandoah Valley (roughly 2 hours away), but given the fact that I had an evening departure to Ireland, we kept it slightly closer to town and opted for a hike only an hour drive from DC towards Leesburg, VA. To hike to Raven Rocks, join the Appalachian trial right after you turn onto Pine Grove Road where you will see a small parking area. Follow the white markers for about 1.5 hours, past the sign marking the Virginia/West Virginia border (.4 miles to your destination), and you will know you are there when you stumble upon a clearing with beautiful, huge rocks over impressive views of the Shenandoah Valley. With a 30 minute stop for lunch and venturing a little farther past Raven Rocks, we hiked for a just under four hours. A perfect hike that was 11+ miles and given the heat, thankfully almost completely shaded!
The perfect day before a night on the plane!
